It is well known that dental phobia and fear is something that puts people off visiting the dentist despite pain, poor oral health and even if teeth have fallen out due to serious decay. You may think that you are the most nervous dental patient on the planet. Many of our patients have this misconception but rest assured that we more than likely will have helped somebody who was more nervous than you. Many of our patients are in tears when they pluck up the courage to pick up the phone and speak to us about making that first appointment.
At the British Centre of Dental Phobia a little TLC goes a long way. Our aim is first to listen to your concerns, understand the basis of why you are nervous and then help you with a range of solutions specifically for you. In the last 18 years I have treated thousands of petrified patients and no two have been the same everyone needs an individual approach.
At your first appointment you will sit down with Jayne our care coordinator away from the dental chair or room and have a chat with her. We really want to get to know you and understand any specific issues and concerns that you may have. Following this if you are happy you will have a full consultation with myself. Jayne may also be present during this and only if you are comfortable at this stage I will have a look in your mouth with a dental mirror only without probing anything. We may need to take some x-rays if you are comfortable with them and also some photographs of your teeth.
Once I have had the chance to examine you I will present you with some options of how we can treat you. There is no obligation to undertake treatment at this or any stage and we can proceed at your pace.
During treatment you can ask me to stop at anytime and we can use some communication hand signals to ensure you are in full control at all times. Some techniques that I use to put you at ease:
- Allow you to bring music of your own choice or play a selection of calming background music.
- Relaxation methods and techniques before treatment
- Oral or IV sedation that puts you into a relaxed dream-like state of mind
- I ensure that your teeth are fully numb before starting any treatment
- I empower you to control when I can start treatment, stop treatment or if you need to ask any questions at any stage I will help
- I use painless injection techniques and offer topical gels to numb the gums first
I provide a full range of dental treatments from simple repairs to complete tooth replacement with implants. No mater what your treatment is I will explain to you the step by step processes involved at each and every stage and ensure that you are in control at all times.
